The American Medical Association’s publication American Medical News released data from a 2011 study that analyzed the claims of more than 800 obstetrician medical liability lawsuits taken from a database of 120,000 claims. The authors made the following conclusions about the top complaints against obstetricians:

- Miscommunication was cited in 36 percent of the cases.

- Inadequate documentation was regularly mentioned.
- Administrative failures were regularly mentioned.

In addition, the authors found that the most common allegations were that the obstetrician:
- Delayed treatment of fetal distress
- Improperly executed vaginal delivery
- Improperly managed the pregnancy
